Vineyard: Nestled in the sun-drenched Côtes du Rhône region of southern France, Château Pégau's Cuvée Maclura grapes flourish on biodynamically farmed, pebble-strewn slopes bathed in Mediterranean sunshine. Vines, some over 100 years old, are deeply rooted in the clay and limestone soils, extracting rich minerality and complex flavors.

Winemaking: Hand-harvested grapes undergo whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts in concrete tanks. Gentle maceration draws out vibrant fruit and delicate tannins. Aged for 12 months in a mix of foudres and barrels, the wine is bottled unfiltered, preserving its raw energy and terroir expression.

Tasting Notes: A symphony of aromas unfolds: ripe blackcurrant and juicy cassis mingle with whispers of licorice, garrigue herbs, and a touch of peppery spice. On the palate, it's medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, bursting with juicy raspberry and cherry notes framed by fine-grained tannins. A vibrant acidity enlivens the finish, leaving lingering hints of cocoa and earth.

Varietal: This cuvée is a classic Côtes du Rhône blend, primarily Grenache (60%), Syrah (30%), and Mourvèdre (10%), with a touch of Cinsault for finesse. Each grape variety contributes its unique character, weaving a harmonious tapestry of flavors.

AVA: Côtes du Rhône Villages, a prestigious appellation within the larger Côtes du Rhône, encompasses diverse terroirs known for producing high-quality, characterful wines.

Production: This limited-production gem sees only around 10,000 bottles released each year, making it a sought-after expression of Château Pégau's exceptional terroir and winemaking philosophy.

Alcohol: Around 14% ABV, reflecting the warm southern climate and ripe grapes, yet balanced by refreshing acidity.

Overall: Cuvée Maclura 2020 is a captivating Côtes du Rhône, brimming with juicy fruit, vibrant acidity, and elegant tannins. It's a versatile food pairing partner, ideal for grilled meats, stews, and rich cheeses. With its youthful exuberance and aging potential, this is a wine to savor now and enjoy for years to come.

"A pretty complex nose of cherries, berries, dried herbs, cola and baking spices. It’s medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Round and juicy with a bright core of cherries and some chocolate undertones towards the finish. Balanced and delicious with a vivid finish. Drink or hold." - James Suckling
